The Parade of Homes opens, a free Bowie night in Holladay, and 103 degrees Saturday

Thirty houses across Salt Lake and Tooele counties unlock at noon today and stay open through August 15. The range is wider than usual for an anniversary year: the smallest is around 2,100 square feet, the largest runs past 15,000, and one of the entries is a remodel rather than a build, which is the closest this event gets to showing you something you could actually copy at home. One ticket is $25 and covers everybody age 3 and up. It gets you one walk through each of the 30 houses plus two re-entries, so if there is a kitchen you want to stand in twice, you have exactly two of those in the tank for the whole two weeks. The addresses are not published anywhere until opening day. They go live this morning on the app and the website, and in a printed magazine you pick up at the first house you walk into or at the builders association office in Sandy. The schedule is the trap. Homes are open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 9, and they are closed Sunday and Monday. Every year somebody blocks out a Sunday afternoon for this and finds locked doors.

More than 385,000 acres have burned across Utah in 2026, which is more than the state's total for the previous five fire years put together. The setup was in place before summer started: the 2025-26 winter was the warmest on record here and delivered one of the lowest snowpacks the state has measured, so fuels were dry enough to carry fire as early as March. Fire managers have described growth of up to 30,000 acres in a single day, a rate they say they have not seen in a very long time. For the valley the effect right now is atmospheric, with smoke from northern Utah and California fires settling into the bowl and pushing air quality toward the unhealthy-for-sensitive-groups range along the Wasatch Front.

Statewide reservoir storage now averages 57% full. That is 17 percentage points under normal for late July and 22 points under where the same reservoirs sat a year ago. The speed is the alarming part: storage dropped 13 points between May and July, against a typical drop of about 1 point over those same two months. The Great Salt Lake is on the same curve, with the south arm sitting near 4,191.6 feet, roughly three feet above the record low it set less than four years ago and about six and a half feet under the 4,198 mark the state treats as the floor for a healthy lake. The lake normally gives up about three more feet to evaporation before the water year ends, and there is no snowpack banked to put it back.

The Constantly Nowhere Tour lands downtown tonight with LANDMVRKS and Thousand Below both playing real sets first, not token thirty-minute slots. Poppy has spent a decade rebuilding what she is from the ground up, from internet pop performance art into a metal act that other metal acts take seriously, and the current show leans hard on the loud half of that.

Saturday afternoon at the Fairpark stacks Banda Los Recoditos, Banda Machos, Banda El Recodo de Chuy Lizárraga, El Mexicano de Casimiro and Rancho Barriga onto a single ticket. It is one of the biggest regional Mexican bills the valley gets all year, and it lands on the west side rather than downtown, which is where the audience for it actually lives.

More than a hundred vendors set up on the west lawn at Wheeler Historic Farm every Sunday morning through October 11, with produce, bread, honey and a long row of makers. The farm itself is open around it, so the animals and the trails are part of the deal rather than a separate trip.

The old Trolley Wing Co space off Blue Vista Lane reopened a few weeks ago as Grady's, and the pitch is that everything except the bread is made in house. Order the chicken tenders. They are brined breast meat fried in beef tallow, which is a sentence you do not usually get to write about a strip-mall sports bar, and the house-made sweet potato tots come out of the same tallow. The brown butter nuts are the thing that disappears off the table before anybody decides to share.

Cottonwood Heights cut the Mountview splash pad back to a reduced schedule for the summer to save water, so it now runs Saturdays, Sundays and summer holidays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., through Labor Day. Admission costs nothing, the park around it holds two playgrounds, restrooms, tennis and basketball courts and a walking path, and on a weekend it is one of the few water options in the valley that never sells out of anything.

Through Sunday in Salt Lake City, the festival's final weekend runs 20-plus shows across four venues at $15 a ticket.

The Mexican spot on the southwest corner of North Temple and 1000 West closes for good today. Margerito Parra opened it in 2009 and says business has slowed over the last three years as chain stores and apartment buildings went up around him, and he is retiring rather than fighting it. It is the second long-running valley restaurant to close in a week: Shanghai Café, the Chinese and Vietnamese place near State Street and 1300 South, served its last meal on July 27 after 35 years, with owner UT Doan retiring at 72 and the complex slated to become apartments.

Today runs 100 under sun, then Saturday and Sunday both hit 103 before Monday backs off to 98. Overnight lows only fall to the low 70s, which is the part that wears people down, because nothing in the house or the pavement resets between days. Salt Lake County is holding five recreation centers open until 8 p.m. Sunday as cool zones, on top of the more than 60 pools, libraries, rec centers and senior centers that serve the same purpose countywide.

An adult Salt Lake County resident tested positive for West Nile virus this week and is expected to recover fully. The number worth paying attention to is not the single case but the mosquito data behind it. Three abatement districts have found the virus in 86 mosquito samples inside the county so far this season, against 39 at this same point last year and 18 in 2024. Statewide the count is 296 positive samples.

Elevated Development Group has filed a preliminary subdivision application for 28 townhomes in four buildings at the corner of California Avenue and Utah Street, a block off Redwood Road. Four existing structures on the two parcels would come down for it. The site is zoned MU-5, which allows rowhouses up to 45 feet, so three and four stories are on the table. There is no approval date yet, and the application only went in earlier this month.
