Das Energi takes Saltair, Riverton's free Friday is back, and Sugar House Park's pond ran dry

Utah's biggest electronic festival takes over The Great Saltair Friday through Sunday with more than a hundred artists across the three days. Friday is the heaviest bill on paper, with Zedd and Seven Lions on top and Hayden James, Chris Lorenzo and Wooli underneath. Saturday goes deeper into bass with Ganja White Night, Liquid Stranger, Hybrid Minds and Friction. Sunday closes it out with What So Not, Noizu, Matroda and Crankdat. The schedule is not identical night to night, and that trips people up every year. Friday and Saturday run 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday starts at 4 and ends at 1, an hour earlier on both ends, which means the Sunday headliner lands while most people are still assuming they have until two. This is an 18 and over event and the door checks physical ID, so it is genuinely not a family plan. There is no camping on site either, so however you get to Magna is also how you get home at two in the morning.

Salt Lake County drained the pond at Sugar House Park last week because there is no longer enough water coming into it. July flows through the Parleys Creek system hit record lows, and nearly all of what is left is being passed downstream rather than diverted, with roughly an eighth going to Little Dell Reservoir. County parks staff decided an empty basin was better than a shallow one sitting stagnant in triple-digit heat. The county's hydrology manager has said the pond may not return to a normal level until the next runoff season, which puts it deep into next spring.

Utah closed in mid-July on the 21.7-acre Franklin campus off Decker Lake and will turn it into the permanent home of the Department of Health and Human Services. The site carries five buildings and more than 300,000 square feet, along with a cafeteria, a fitness center and an auditorium already built in. It is a large state agency moving its center of gravity to the west side rather than downtown, and the actual relocation is expected to take two to three years depending on design and funding.

Millcreek's free Monday night concert series runs every week through August 31 on the grass at Canyon Rim Park, booked by the Millcreek Arts Council out of the local pool of bands. Tonight is Die Shiny playing electro pop from 7 to 9.

Salt Lake County's Civic Museum and its Art in Public Places program open Del Dicho al Hecho on Wednesday evening, a show by Oaxacan artist Luis Rosado Montes built around rebozos, the woven Mexican shawls used for everything from carrying a baby to ceremony. He cuts and rebuilds them into wall work. The county put it together with the Consulate of Mexico in Salt Lake City.

Sergi Solans put Salt Lake ahead in the 60th minute Saturday in St. Louis before Marcel Hartel pulled it back twelve minutes later, and a point on the road ended two straight losses. The reward is the busiest stretch of home dates all season.

Salt Lake spent the back half of July in Texas and it went about how the standings suggest. Tuesday starts a six-game homestand in Daybreak, the first baseball in the valley in two weeks.

Order the original cinnamon roll. The trick is heavy whipping cream poured over the pan right before it goes in the oven, which is why the bottom half comes out closer to pudding than bread, and it is the reason this place went from a home operation to a shop with a line. The rotating flavors are worth a second one: brown butter chai, lemon blueberry, and a Fruity Pebble roll that sounds like a gimmick and outsells most of the menu. They also sell frozen take-and-bake packs, which is the move if you are feeding people Saturday morning and do not want to drive at eight.

Wildflower season is on up here, with something like 120 species carpeting the meadows above Alta: lupine, Indian paintbrush, columbine, sticky geranium, and the sego lily. The summer road past the Albion base takes you into the basin, and the meadow trails off it are gentle enough for most people who are willing to breathe at 9,500 feet.

Salt Lake County artist Jiyoun Lee-Lodge's winning design for the 23-foot humpback at 900 East and 900 South was revealed Saturday during 801 Day. It is called Open Your Eyes and it keeps the whale's shape while changing everything on the surface: a blue, white and pink gradient underneath, multicolored dots, a flowing wave pattern, and one large eye on one side. The sculpture went up in 2022 and became a neighborhood mascot faster than anybody planned, so the city ran an open call rather than quietly repainting it.

Lincoln Avenue Communities and the Housing Authority of Salt Lake City started construction in late July on Erma's at Fairmont, a 110-unit affordable senior building in Sugar House looking straight onto Fairmont Park. Units are one and two bedrooms aimed at seniors earning between 20% and 80% of the area median income, in a neighborhood where market rents have moved well past what a fixed income covers. It is the developer's first ground-up project in Utah, and a second phase with another tower is already planned.

The median price of a single-family home in Salt Lake County reached $645,000 in the second quarter, up 4.88% from a year ago and the highest quarterly median ever recorded here. Sales went up with it, 2,334 homes against 2,231 in the same quarter last year, with the strongest year-over-year gains in several Salt Lake City ZIP codes plus parts of South Jordan, West Jordan and Taylorsville. Houses are taking a little longer to move, with average cumulative days on market up from 45 to 48.
