The Mammoth open at home Thursday, Wu-Tang says goodbye in West Valley, and 9th and 9th throws Whale Fest
Plus free pumpkin painting in West Jordan, a six-course Sicilian dinner, and sun through Friday.
Good morning, Salt Lake Valley.
The Utah Mammoth play their first real game of the season Thursday night at the Delta Center, against the same Chicago team they beat in the franchise's first game two years ago.
Monday starts with showers and thunderstorms, then the forecast turns sunny every day through Friday, when the high reaches 80. That makes it a good week for Tuesday's Wu-Tang show in West Valley City and Saturday's Whale Fest parade at 9th and 9th.

Best night of the week Catch the Utah Mammoth home opener
The Utah Mammoth open their NHL regular season at home Thursday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. It is the second time in three seasons Chicago has been the home-opener opponent.
Our take
Utah has never lost a home opener. The first one was a 5-2 win over this same Chicago team in October 2024, the first game the franchise ever played. Thursday also starts the arena's busiest month, with 26 events on the October calendar.
β οΈ Heads up: The same building hosts CarΓn LeΓ³n Friday night and UFC 332 Saturday, so downtown parking fills three nights running. TRAX drops you across the street.

Crews knock down a burned warehouse near the Granary District
A three-alarm fire burned through an abandoned commercial building at 356 W 700 S on Sunday. More than 50 firefighters fought it from outside because the building's many additions left hidden spaces that were unsafe to enter. Part of a neighboring apartment building, at least four units, was evacuated as a precaution, and no one was hurt.

Worth it if you want one last look See Wu-Tang Clan's farewell tour in West Valley City
Wu-Tang Forever: The Final Chamber, the hip-hop group's farewell tour, stops at the West Valley amphitheater Tuesday night. Bone Thugs-n-Harmony opens.
Our take
The North American leg ends October 4 in Phoenix, so Tuesday is one of the last U.S. nights of the tour. Bone Thugs as the opener makes it two classic '90s rap acts for one ticket.
β οΈ Heads up: The forecast for Tuesday night is clear with a low around 48. Bring a jacket for the ride home from the lawn.

Worth it for the parade and the contests Enter the whale call contest at Whale Fest
Whale Fest takes over the 9th and 9th roundabout Saturday afternoon with crafts, local vendors, food trucks, live music, a costume contest, a whale call contest, and a parade.
Our take
The costume contest starts at 2:30, the whale call contest at 3, and the parade at 3:30. Live music takes over at 4, so kids can get through all three contests and the parade before dinner.
β οΈ Heads up: Contest entrants have to check in on site between 1:30 and 2:15. Spots are limited, so a family planning to enter should get there at 1:30.

Worth it for a family Sunday afternoon See Sugar Skull at Kingsbury Hall
Sugar Skull! is a bilingual DΓa de Muertos musical by the Mexico Beyond Mariachi ensemble. A 12-year-old girl follows a candy skeleton that comes to life and meets ancestors, a sorceress, trickster spirits, and La Catrina while she finishes her family's ofrenda.
Our take
Youth seats are $13, so two adults and two kids can go for under $100. The show uses traditional Mexican music and dance, which gives kids a way into the holiday a month before November 2.
β οΈ Heads up: Every person needs a ticket, including babies. Lap sitting is not allowed.

Skip unless you already know the lineup Weigh Breakaway at America First Field
Breakaway brings two nights of electronic dance music to the RSL stadium, with TiΓ«sto, Kaskade, John Summit, and Chris Lake at the top of the lineup.
Our take
This is a seven-hour night built for people who already follow these DJs. If you want one big show this week without a full evening on your feet, Empire of the Sun on Thursday is the easier ticket.
β οΈ Heads up: Backpacks are banned. Bags must be 14 by 6 by 14 inches or smaller, and umbrellas and chairs stay in the car.

Book now, it is one night only Book the Sicilian wine dinner at 'mina
'mina Ristorante Siciliano is pouring wines from Sicily's Feudo Montoni estate at a six-course dinner Thursday. Chef Leonardo Li Mura built the menu around the food of Sicily's interior instead of its coast.
Our take
The courses run from crispy panelle with aged pecorino to fresh fusilli with white pork ragΓΉ, olive oil poached swordfish, and braised beef. The last pour is a Nero d'Avola from century-old vines that still grow on their own roots.
β οΈ Heads up: Reservations go through OpenTable, and it lands on the same night as the Mammoth opener. Pick one.

Worth it for a free Friday night Paint a pumpkin at the Viridian Event Center
West Jordan's free First Friday concert moves indoors for October. Code Blue Revival plays at 7:30pm, and a pumpkin-painting session starts at 6:30pm.
Our take
Kids get a pumpkin to paint, then the band plays, all inside the library's event center next to Veterans Memorial Park.
β οΈ Heads up: The city says pumpkin supplies are limited. Get there at 6:30 if painting is the reason you're going.
